Uninstall all PlugY, D2SE and Diablo II that you currently have - we need a clean slate - this is very important Save a copy of your characters if you want to save any of them - I can’t promise they will work, but mine did I promise, it’s pretty easy, these are just very detailed instructions so I can re-create this for myself in 10 years while old and stoned: (estimated time to complete process once files are downloaded is 5-15 minutes, Download links are at the bottom) I hope this helps some other people to enjoy Diablo 2 in the 2020s as well. Huge props to all the other good sources for this info, but we had a hard time finding a succinct and complete guide to how to do this in 2020 on the latest version of Windows 10. A friend of mine wrote this guide for me that I thought was really useful on how to get our Diablo 2 CD keys running on copies of the game that are moddable and can run in higher resolution so that we can play through in HD.
